Editorial Consulting

Strategic editorial guidance for organizations navigating complex communications landscapes. We help you sharpen your message, strengthen your editorial processes, and build content strategies that hold up under scrutiny.

Editorial consulting at Auralis Associates brings the discipline and standards of professional newsrooms to your organization. Whether you are a nonprofit publishing an annual report, a company preparing for a media-intensive product launch, or a government agency reviewing internal communications processes, we provide hands-on guidance that improves the clarity, accuracy, and credibility of your content.

Our editorial consulting is led by Priya Chakrabarti, our Research Director and Editorial Consultant, with support from the full team when specialized expertise is needed. We work on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis depending on the scope and duration of your project. Every engagement is tailored to your specific situation - we do not use generic templates or one-size-fits-all frameworks.

Our Process

1

Assessment & Discovery

We review your current editorial processes, content strategy, and communications materials. We identify strengths, gaps, and areas where improvement will have the greatest impact.

2

Strategy & Recommendations

Based on our assessment, we develop a set of actionable recommendations. These may cover editorial standards, content workflows, messaging frameworks, audience targeting, or brand voice consistency.

3

Implementation Support

We work alongside your team to implement the recommended changes. This may include hands-on editing, workshop sessions, document creation, or ongoing advisory support during a transition period.

4

Review & Handoff

We review the results, document the processes and standards we have established, and prepare a handoff package so your team can maintain and build on the improvements independently.

Who This Service Is For

Editorial consulting is designed for organizations that produce or commission written content and want to improve its quality, consistency, or strategic impact. Typical clients include communications departments, marketing teams, publishing houses, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and small businesses that are building or refining their content operations. This service is also suitable for organizations preparing for high-stakes communications events such as product launches, crisis responses, annual reporting, or regulatory submissions.

How a Session Works

Editorial consulting can be booked on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis. Hourly consultations are suitable for focused questions, document reviews, or brainstorming sessions. Full-day sessions allow for deeper work such as editorial audits, content strategy development, or intensive editing and rewriting. Weekly retainers provide ongoing support for organizations going through a significant content initiative or communications overhaul.

Sessions are held at our Elgin Street office (meeting room seats 8) or by video call. All sessions are scheduled during business hours (Mon-Fri 9:00-17:00 EST).

What to Prepare

To make the most of your editorial consulting engagement, we recommend gathering:

  • Samples of your current content (publications, website copy, reports, social media)
  • Any existing brand guidelines or style guides
  • A description of your target audience and their needs
  • Specific content challenges or goals you want to address
  • Information about your editorial workflow and team structure

Deliverables & Formats

Deliverables vary by engagement and may include: written editorial assessments, style guides, content strategy documents, edited drafts with tracked changes, content calendars, messaging frameworks, and process documentation. All written deliverables are provided in PDF and DOCX format. Presentations are available in PPTX or PDF.

Timelines

Hourly consultations can often be scheduled within one to two weeks. Full-day sessions typically require two to three weeks of advance booking. Weekly retainers are arranged on a project basis and can begin within one to four weeks depending on availability. Rush requests are accommodated when possible and may carry additional fees.

Revisions & Follow-Up

2 rounds of revisions are included in every engagement. For ongoing retainer arrangements, revisions are handled within the allocated hours. After the engagement concludes, we remain available for follow-up questions and can be re-engaged for additional consulting as needed.

What Is Not Included

Editorial consulting does not include ghostwriting (producing complete pieces of content under your byline), graphic design or layout services, social media management or posting, public relations or media outreach (see our Media Training service for spokesperson preparation), or legal review of content for regulatory compliance.

Common Questions About Editorial Consulting

Can you work with content written in French?

Yes. Marc-Andre Beaumont, our Senior Reporter and French Content Lead, handles French-language editorial consulting. We can work with bilingual content projects where both English and French versions are required.

Do you work on-site at our office?

We can arrange on-site work for full-day sessions or weekly retainers. Travel costs for locations outside Ottawa are quoted separately. Remote sessions via video call are also available and are the norm for hourly consultations.

What is the difference between editing and consulting?

Editing focuses on improving specific pieces of content - correcting, refining, and strengthening the text. Consulting addresses the underlying processes, strategies, and standards that produce content. Most engagements involve some of both, weighted according to your needs.

Can you help with crisis communications?

Yes. We provide editorial support for crisis communications, including message development, statement drafting, Q&A preparation, and media response strategy. For spokesperson training in a crisis context, see our Media Training service.
